| Arriving in Buzios, Brazil
|
|
Friday, 16 January 2009
I guess we have kept you in the dark long enough. It's time to spill the beans and tell you where we are. Buzios was a small fishing village until he early 60s when a relatively unknown French actress by the name of Brigitte Bardot 'discovered' the town along with her Brazilian boyfriend. Since then, Buzios has become one of Brazils most animated seaside resorts, littered with fine restaurants, boutiques, villas, bars, and posh pousadas (guest houses). Beautiful Buzios sits on a jutting peninsula scalloped by no less than 17 beaches. |

Well, let's put it this way, until today we were under the distinct
impression that the rain in Spain stayed mainly in the plain. We have
found that it actually seems to be forecast to be parked over Madrid
for the entire time of our visit here. (But not being well-versed in
Spanish geography, we may very well be in the middle of the plain - we
really have no idea.)
After an uneventful and relatively uneventful travel day, we arrived in Madrid this morning and made our way via the Metro to the bed & breakfast we'll be staying at while we visit Madrid's attractions. Fortunately, we thought to pack umbrellas.

So where in the world are Chris and David this week? Last year, our friends Jim and Bill, from Park City, asked us if we would like to accompany them on a trip to Thailand. We thought about it for a few seconds before deciding it would be a great way to visit another country with a friend that could actually speak the language. Jim, our CPA, spent three years in Thailand as a Peace Corp volunteer and had returned to Thailand later to spend time in a Buddhist monastery. He is fluent in Thai and has many friends and acquaintances in country. In booking our trip, we decided that we would stop in some other country en route to Thailand. Delta and its partner airlines had a routing through Taipei, so we thought, "what the heck, we've never been to Taiwan." We departed Salt Lake City on Friday evening, the 17th
of November, and were routed through Los Angeles; Incheon, Korea; and then on
to Taipei, arriving Sunday morning. |

We flew from Taipei to Bangkok on Thanksgiving
Day, November 23. After going through customs and immigration, retrieving our
bags, and catching a ride from the airport, we arrived at our hotel after
midnight on Friday the 24th. As I mentioned earlier, Jim spent three years in Thailand teaching
English as a Peace Corps Volunteer about 30 years ago. He developed many lasting friendships with
his fellow Thai counterparts and his students.
They had planned an exciting itinerary for us, and it began on the Friday
after our arrival. |

As many of you know, David and I had another trip planned to Japan and Palau. Our good friends, Mike and Terry, who have been recipients of our previous travelogues, were so taken by our pictures and descriptions of our previous trips that they wanted us to go back...and take them! So after more than a year of planning and anticipation, we all left Saturday, April 8th for a two week adventure back to Japan and the tiny Micronesian country of Palau.
After a long flight from Portland, we arrived in Tokyo. |

We left Tokyo on Friday morning, April 14th. After a short layover in Guam, we had another short flight to Palau,
arriving about 8:30 in the evening. We were met with a lei greeting
from Zenie, the manager of the Carolines Resort where we stayed while
in Palau. After a short drive through the capital, Koror, we arrived
at Carolines and were shown to our bungalows, situated on a hillside
with spectacular views of the Philippine Sea. |

Our trip to Australia got off to an unusual start! It's hard to decide which was most stressful - the unexpected visa denial (hours before our flight was to depart), or the category 5 cyclone bearing down on our destination! But we made it OK and all was well in the end!
